Americans are already looking ahead to the 2026–2027 winter, and early climate signals suggest that this could be an unusually interesting season for snow lovers, travelers and communities that regularly deal with winter storms.

The major factor to watch is El Niño. NOAA says El Niño is strengthening and currently gives a greater than 90% chance of a very strong event during the Northern Hemisphere fall and winter of 2026–27. There is also a 69% chance that the October–December period could reach historically strong levels.

But what could this mean for snowfall across the United States?

How El Niño Can Change U.S. Snowfall

El Niño changes tropical Pacific temperatures and rainfall patterns, which can influence the position of the jet stream. That, in turn, affects where storms travel across the country. NOAA notes that El Niño's influence is strongest during winter and can continue into early spring.

December 2026: Snow Potential Begins to Build

December could bring an increasingly active storm pattern across parts of the southern United States and the West.

Higher elevations in the Sierra Nevada, Rockies and Southwest could have better opportunities for significant snowfall when Pacific storms encounter sufficiently cold air.

Meanwhile, some northern states may experience a milder-than-average pattern, which could limit snow accumulation at times.

January 2027: A Potentially Active Winter Month

January is likely to be one of the key months to watch.

If the strong El Niño pattern remains established, the southern storm track could continue producing frequent precipitation. Where temperatures are cold enough, that moisture could translate into substantial snowfall, particularly across mountain regions.

The Northeast and Midwest, however, may see a more complicated mix of snow, rain and temperature swings rather than persistent cold.

February 2027: Winter Storms Could Continue

By February, the El Niño influence may still be significant. Southern and western areas could continue experiencing storm activity, while individual cold-air outbreaks could create opportunities for major snow events farther east.

However, long-range forecasts cannot reliably predict individual snowstorms this far ahead.

What Should Americans Expect?

The biggest takeaway is regional contrast.

A strong El Niño can increase snowfall potential in parts of the southern and western United States while producing warmer or less consistently snowy conditions across portions of the northern tier. NOAA emphasizes that these are probabilities rather than guarantees because every El Niño event develops differently.

NOAA's seasonal forecast models are already providing guidance for winter 2026–27, but forecasts will become more useful as the season approaches.

Bottom line: Winter 2026–27 could feature a fascinating mix of snow and temperature patterns across the USA. A potentially very strong El Niño makes the West, Southwest and southern tier especially important areas to watch, while the Northeast, Midwest and northern states could experience a more variable winter.
